Dr. Phillips Center Expands Free Arts & Wellness Programs for Veterans This Spring

Culminating showcase on April 15 celebrates 10-week workshop series in partnership with Orlando VA Healthcare System

Orlando, FL – On April 15, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts welcomed 25 Veterans to the stage for a culminating performance celebrating the completion of a 10-week Arts & Wellness workshop series. Throughout the program, Veterans developed new skills and created original work through drum circle, choir, spoken word and improv theatre classes.

This spring, 56 Veterans and caregivers participated in the program, and classes were expanded from eight weeks to 10 in response to growing demand and interest. After the fall 2025 sessions, Veterans expressed a strong desire to continue meeting and creating together, requesting additional weeks to further explore each art form and deepen connections with their peers.

“Since opening in 2014, we’ve set out to be a nationally recognized hub for performing arts and wellness education,” said Kathy Ramsberger, president & CEO of Dr. Phillips Center. “With growing demand and generous community support, we continue expanding access—bringing the healing power of the arts to more lives.”

Launched in 2024, Dr. Phillips Center’s Arts & Wellness initiative in partnership with the Orlando VA Healthcare System offers a supportive space for Veterans and caregivers to explore creativity, connection and healing through the arts. The free sessions are led by professional Central Florida artists and supported by clinical professionals from the Orlando VA Healthcare System. Classes are offered at both Dr. Phillips Center and the Orlando VA Medical Center.

“At the Orlando VA Healthcare System, we are committed to caring for the whole Veteran, mind, body and spirit. Programs like this partnership with Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts provide a powerful outlet for healing, connection and personal growth,” said Timothy J. Cooke, Director and CEO, Orlando VA Healthcare System. “Watching our Veterans step onto the stage with confidence and pride is a testament to the impact of creative expression in their recovery and well-being. We are proud to expand opportunities that help Veterans rediscover purpose, build community and thrive beyond their clinical care.”

Generous support for the program is provided by the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation, Hatalom Corporation, June Nelson in honor of Margery Pabst Steinmetz, Mike and Jessica Mears, Pabst Steinmetz Foundation, VyStar Foundation and Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation.
